Dear Me -
I'm writing to you from the year 2015 (at the ripe old age of 44!!) in order to give you some advice about how to get here in one lean, fit, healthy piece! Here's the deal -
Stop trying to be an elite athlete again - it’s over. Those discs you popped, those ops you endured? Listen up, your body is saying NO. There’s no way back to the top of that hill.
Find a new one to climb.

Here’s what you need to do...

1. Find a mentor for your body. Trade brute force for knowledge of movement. Start now. Grab a book (there’s this thing called the internet but it ain’t around yet) by an old guy in great shape and awful white underpants. His name is Joseph Pilates. Joe knows that true power lies in posture, mobility and mindfulness. You need to learn this.

2. STOP! running so much.... I know you love it, but your back hates it. Just sprint now and again.

3. Health is like a puzzle. Work it out. You think it's a given - but that'll change. It’s never to early to know this.

4. Try to do any #3 of these each week -

  • Interval training Hell yeah! Be sure to check out Prof Tabata’s work in Japan. It’s due out around now. 4 minutes makes sense, right? You will always have time to have time.
  • Plyometrics Try this  (it'll save the joints!).
  • Circuits Mix it up, have some fun, favor whole body, compound and weight bearing movements. Always be ready to climb a rope - no legs allowed.
  • Sprints You know they cut you up, and you know it’s ALL about quality. Never more than 6. EVER. Your competitive days are over.
  • Olympic lifting rocks and squats pay, right? Speaking of rocks - why not lift em? It’s way more fun, and the target has moved now. This is for life. Take it outside any chance you get. Half the planet is Vitamin D deficient. Including you!
  • Mindful Movement - Tai Chi, Yoga, Pilates
  • Jogging - There is no other reason to jog. EVER.

5. Ditch your gym membership. Do everything outside.

6. Let your body be where it wants to be. You’re an ectomorph so don’t waste your time trying to bulk up.

7. Know what matters before it really matters to your health.

8. The more they say you need something, the less of it you should probably consume.

9. The more they demonize something, the more of it you probably should eat.
Eat more eggs!

10. Sugar is sh*t. But you kinda know that already. Just sayin.

11. Keep moving like a kid. Crawl. Walk. Swim. Climb the big tree in the garden at home any time you go to see the folks. Right to the top....

12. Health is a contest against misinformation, bad science, bad medicine, fast food and commercial interests. Look them in the eye, learn their language - stand firm and listen only to your body.

13. Contest time with knowledge. Never stop learning.

14. Don’t fear fat! Tear out that carb loading chapter in Lore of Running. Tim Noakes will eventually do it himself anyway!

15. Be fluent in your body. Nourish it with wisdom, food and movement. Always assume you have much to learn. Knowledge changes - change with it.

Oh yeah. About that new hill to climb.....

Be great if you could make this movie in 2005 instead of 2013. You don’t know anything about movies yet, but trust me on this one. It beats working.

Live well

Donal

I and my wife Sonja really enjoyed Cereal Killers. Our lives have now changed for the better. We eat low carb and high fat and protein. I have already noticed a big improvement in our health. We have included our children, teenagers in this lifestyle as well. Keep spreading the Good Message Donal. We also love you to know as well that GOD in Christ Jesus is our LORD and Redeemer. Just threw that in as an extra, take it as you want Donal. Thanks, Robert:)

Hi Donal, good work I admire your philosophy of life, just wish I could do better at copying it! Am gonna have a bash for the next 10 days, hired a PT to do sessions every other day for a kick start before taking son to learn to "Free Dive" in Tenerife, I need to make very quick progress as I'm massively out of comfort zone, even worse shape than the last time you saw me pal! Allabess Donal, love, Dave

Donal, you're my Hero! Until 25 to 30 had always been 122 to 130#'s. In my 40's - climbed to the 140's. .during 60's - up to 150's. Then I managed to reach 160 #'s in my 70's. Depressing as have been health-minded, eating pretty darned clean. Cereal Killer changed my life. Never do diets. Giving up grains was about the hardest thing I've done. . attempted this at 84, now 85+ and below 140#'s now. You're a gutsy, beautiful person who has my eternal gratitude.
I may have one foot you know where, but am a happy camper and doing just fine. Thanks, Jan

The more they demonize something, the more of it you probably should eat... REALLY!! SUGAR, REFINED CARBS, TRANS FATS here I come to gorge on you, on Donal's advice!! JOKE... While most of your comments are inspiring, they still contain adolescent elements that make no sense, just as most adolescence fail to do!!
Don't get me wrong, I love your enthusiasm and your healthy lifestyle inspires and supports thousands.. but that adolescent rebel.. he needs to grow up!! :).

I would like to second that comment. I heard you on the radio last year and after watching CK1, I was inspired to change my diet and I have become fat adapted. You are an inspiring individual and you are spreading a great message. But please reconsider how you go about it. Don't keep up these childish jibes at various carb product companies. Do continue to present the findings of the science community which give weight to your campaign and let's try to change peoples minds with facts and not silly, playground insults.

Great to hear you have benefitted from the message Eoghan but I gotta push back on elements of this comment. What "silly, playground insults" are you actually referring to here? To be very clear, the media do not care about you, your health, or me and my health. They care about a story. Do you honestly believe a national radio station anywhere in the world will embrace a scientific fact from a non medical source as the basis for an isolated story? The food and nutrition message has been manipulated by commercial interests for decades. I know because I played a strategic, active part in that process and was paid to do so. Having no marketing, advertising, or PR budget here we have to hustle hard - very hard - to get this message out. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The findings of science are as dull as ditchwater to the media - and the public. Of course we present them but we will also continue to agonize aggressively for change. My own country of birth - Ireland - is frankly a disgrace. By 2030 we will be 90% overweight/obese while a govt anointed nutrition tzar actively endorses Brennan's Bread and refutes WHO sugar guidelines (something to do with our Euro300m sugar industry?). So how does one counter that with zero advertising budget/resources? Those without cash can still build a castle - but the mortar is different.

Hi,

thank you for your movies!
I am a bit confused... in this post - do you recommend NOT to run/jog?

thank you.
