Vulnerable and Rafa Nadal do not belong in the same sentence. Yet the 9 times champion finds himself approaching the French Open at Roland Garros more susceptible to defeat than perhaps ever before. He has just this week been beaten - on clay - by a player you have never heard of (unless you are a tennis fan). I have been saying for some time now that golfers stand to benefit* more from a low carb, high fat diet than possibly any other sportspersons. The demands of the sport - and in particular the mental endurance required over a 4 day tournament like the US Masters - line up very neatly indeed with the rewards of fat adaptation.
Last year I had a chat with a cousin of mine about the benefits of a low carb, high fat, whole foods diet for endurance performance. As an ultra runner he was intrigued enough to give it a shot. Here's what happened…
Any analysis of Body Mass Index (BMI) as that relates to “all cause mortality” (death by whatever) is silver medal science at best. BMI is a poorly contrived measurement of body composition (upon which everyday medical assessments are based) which would put Brad Pitt, The Rock, the entire NFL and the All Blacks Rugby team firmly in the “obese” category.
