the problem with paleo (....and low carb)

Paleo has an image problem.

It's not that it doesn't make you leaner, metabolically healthier and generally all round better looking naked.
Not at all.

This is more of a PR thing. What's happened Paleo is that the crew that once was Robb Wolf and a select few beating their very knowledgable drums in solitude has now gone global - big time. The crew are now a crowd and with that comes dilution - of clarity.

We have always been very careful to cross check (and typically delete) any references in our movies to Paleo (you won't hear it in Cereal Killers 1 although you will in CK2 - Run on Fat) for the simple reason that it is not clearly defined and/or understood in the minds of the masses. Heck we're not even sure where it begins and ends sometimes!

Until now that is.

"Paleo is macro agnostic, focuses on food quality, sleep. movement, gut biome." Robb Wolf

The thing about Paleo is that it doesn't have to be low carb but many just presume it is. Wolf's shoot from the hip tweet just brushed that all aside and added some double cream on top (wait, make that coconut cream to keep it strict Paleo) for good measure.

Sure, Low Carb/ LCHF and Paleo share some common ground, but low carb/LCHF needs a definition as tight as Wolf's. Right now there is no firm Scientific agreement on what the precise macro nutrient breakdown should be in a LCHF diet.

That's important for research, guidance and (hell yes it actually matters - a lot) PR.

70/20/10 anyone?

i wonder if paleo could/should also be culturally determined given the variances in ancestrally determined genetic & epigenetic traits?

For sure there are myriad historical dietary and genetic variables out there Nicole. Some high carb, some low carb - but the common denominator has to be quality of produce!

I prefer the following formula (grams instead of percentages, because every-body will have different moderate protein requirements based on body weight). This is what has been working absolutely fantastic for me:

Carbs: 20 grams or less. No brainer if you truely want/desire/crave the mental sharpness associated with ketosis. As Donal says in the file CK1 : I feel like I'm 17 again. (I'm 50, and can be a miserable Irish fucktard, but now I believe I can do anything with a smile on my face and energy in my body).

Protein: I use Dr. Peter Attia's formula: no more than 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight. So, that's about 80 to 90 grams a day (or less).

Fat: I shoot for 200 grams a day or more. Most fats coming from coconut oil, olive oil, butter, avocados (yes, i watch the carbs) and 4-6 ounces of heavy cream in my coffees. Real easy to hit.

For me, with my little n=1 experimentation, the carbs under 20 grams is absolute key to maintaining the Keto-Buzz.

Thanks Donal! Hope you had a great St. Patricks Day! I had too good of a day thanks to lots of dark frothy beverages and Jameson, but I'm back on track.

I'm becoming an Keto-Vangelist (trademark pending :))thanks to your movies and the great words and works of the Godfathers (Volek, Phinny, Noakes, Attia et. al) Can't get enough!

Already started working with a couple of friends to change them to Fat Adapters. Look forward to starting a new career to spread the Gospel of Fat!

I am working towards my Master's degree in Nutritional Science. I am aware that much of what they are teaching will contrast what I have learned from your movie and your books.

Because society is so brain washed to think that the ways they have been taught most of their lives about what is supposedly the healthy guideline for nutrition - with the carb heavy food pyramid.. I am sure it will be challenging to have them hear about a drastically different way of eating without them looking at me as if i'm crazy. Take away their delicious heavy carbs?! Am I insane?! But we have been taught that fat is bad!! It is already the attitude I get just when I share it with family and friends. Even though they see the great results I've had with it. So.. I am looking forward to having the educational backing to give my voice some credibility. And I will be educating myself even more along the way on how to help clients gravitate and adapt to a LCHF way of eating. Thank you so much for going against the grain! (Pun intended!) and caring enough about the rest of us to push through with your research and broadcasts of your discoveries so that we all can be healthier! I am looking forward to spreading the word!
